Laura’s Smile Foundation spotlights team, Cancer Sucks Schweaty Balls.

Captian Heidi Strelow tells us more about her team.

There isn’t too much behind the name.  I guess the best way to sum it up would be to say that we are serious about The Smile Mile, but like to have fun while participating at it.  All of the team members were familiar with the common phrase Cancer Sucks, we just added a bit of flair to it.  ”Cancer Sucks Schweaty Balls” was developed from a core group of family members, The Strelow’s, whom all like to joke that Strelow is German for Sweaty.  Many of the members are known for their ”excessive sweating during various activities” and we like to joke about that all the time.  We also spun it off of the Saturday Night Live Skit “Schweaty Balls”.  The two ideas were introduced to each other and the group decided it was a hit.  The rest is history.

Just some background information as to why we participate in the smile mile…I grew up with the David family.  Our mother’s, Cindy and Philly, were childhood friends. Our families have done everything together.  The David children are my siblings with unmatched DNA.  As the second generation of this family friendship, we all have seen each other grow up. Some of us are now married and have children of our own.  My “in-laws” are very close and spend a lot of time together, by choice, just like the David’s.  My husband, our children and I have attended every Smile Mile and the more we talked about this with his family, the more they wanted to participate and show their support to a family not so different than their own.  This in turn has flourished into a traveling pack of amateur runners who enjoy spending time with each other and are thankful for the opportunity to support such a great cause.  As Jayna David once wrote, “family trumps everything”.  No words could be more true in my opinion.  I was lucky enough to be born into a great family with wonderful friends and then again to marry into a family that holds the same ideals to be true to them as well.  Over the years, I have gotten to know Laura’s family and see the same charm in their family also.  Any person that was lucky enough to know Laura, will walk this Earth a better person because of how she touched their life. She was amazing!

Thank you for letting me share this story.

Thanks, Heidi!

Laura’s Smile Foundation has been busy finding out details on this year’s teams. We will be spotlighting each team on our blog.

Team Captain, Lisa Colker tells us a little bit about her team, Smells Like Bacon.

Well I and my friend, Laura Raebel had not seen each other in a number of years. We chose Laura’s Smile Mile in 2009 to meet up and do a 5k, it was only the second race I had done.  We chose it because #1 we had not heard of a race for ovarian cancer, or at least not in the area and thought what a wonderful cause to run for.  #2 because it was a smaller race and there certainly is a unique feeling to that, family like.  We stayed after the race and listened to Laura David and her friends/family tell an incredible story of Laura’s journey with her disease, truly inspiring.  We did not have a team that year and in 2010 we did not run the race.

Lisa Colker (in blue) at the Kentucky Derby Festival Mini Marathon.

Fast forward to 2011…..my friend Laura and I decided we did not want to miss the event since it was sad to us that we had to in 2010.  I asked around work to see if others wanted to join in and form a team, I received a positive response.  Several signed up with us, however last minute a few were unable to make it.  We discussed team names at great length and came up with Smells Like Bacon……because a large amount of the team members last year, and more this year, are Police Officers.  Just as a sort of joke amongst us, we certainly don’t have a problem making fun of ourselves!  For some, this was their first race ever and crossing the finishing line was an incredible feeling both to them and for all of us to watch.  Anyone with any fear, reservation or obstacle to overcome can relate.

We stayed after the race in 2011 and again listened to the stories of Laura David from her family and friends but it was evident that something was very wrong and she was not feeling up to attending the event.  I can say that I definitely felt an overwhelming feeling of sadness knowing that her disease had taken over her.  I had heard shortly thereafter and read that Laura David had passed.  Very sad, but happy that I had been part of an event while she was still here.  The news was passed onto the other team mates who said they’d like to do it next year (2012).  Laura Raebel had a terrific run this day and placed 3rd in her age group!

2012-I asked who would be interested and received an even bigger response, so we officially have 18 people signed up.  We decided to stick with the team name as it seems fitting :)   Again this year, there are people that this will be their first race, others are “seasoned runners” but all agree that getting together and running for a wonderful cause makes any kind of pain/discomfort that you may feel while running minor compared to what individuals with these diseases go through.  I feel that running for Laura (David) is an honor and I will do my best for her.  Forming these teams raises money, money that will aid in research.  In research comes knowledge which ultimately can lead to cures.

So we, I, feel honored and happy that we can help in any way, every little bit helps.

So thank you, we look forward to June 2nd, of course with some sadness……

Thank you, Lisa!

Laura’s Smile Foundation has been busy finding out details on this year’s teams. We will be spotlighting each team on our blog.

Today, we  feature OC Runs 4 Women. Here is what Team Captain Mandy James has to say about her team.

Mandy James and teammates at LSM 2010

“Within the last few years, a lot of my friends & I have had children.  I had a my youngest child Jackson last September, and after a month, I was constantly tired from taking care of two little kids.  I decided I needed to do something to get in shape so I could be a good mother to my children.
I joined a program online called My Fitness Pal, which tracks your food and exercise, to help you lose weight.  I have been very successful on the program.  Also, on My Fitness Pal, you can get “friends” who can see your daily activity and help motivate you with kind words, emails, etc.  Well I had done Laura’s Smile Mile two years ago and really enjoyed helping a local cause as well as the beautiful run, so I asked some of my My Fitness Pal friends to form a team.  Five of us from the program decided to join, and we asked some additional friends as well, becoming OC Runs 4 Women.  We are all from the Oak Creek area, so we thought the name was fitting because of OC standing for “Oak Creek” and “Ovarian Cancer”.
This upcoming 5K has continued to motivate all of us to keep fitness and running part of our daily routine.  There is no better motivation then doing something like this as a group, and we are very excited as the date gets closer!
I would like to add that it is nice how something as simple as a 5K has brought so many of us girls together for a common goal.  Some of us aren’t best friends or people who see each other every single day, but we are a group that is all very motivated about getting in shape and very inspired by Laura’s story.  Most of us plan to have our children down there the day of the run to show them the importance fitness and helping out good causes (as well as let them run around too!).”
Thank you, Mandy!

NAMESAKE OF LAURA’S SMILE MILE PASSES AWAY

Laura David fought a long and difficult battle with ovarian cancer

Copyright© 2009 Curt Coenen Photography

30-year-old Laura David of Slinger, WI passed away peacefully under the care of hospice Sunday July 3, 2011.  Laura was the inspiration for Laura’s Smile Mile, a 5K run/walk to raise awareness for ovarian cancer. The 5th annual event was held June 4, 2011, at Veterans Park on Milwaukee’s lakefront.

Laura was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 23, just three months after her wedding. She underwent numerous treatments, including several surgeries, chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant.  She stayed strong through her faith in God and her positive attitude. Laura battled cancer head- on with a smile that was unforgettable.

Laura has touched so many people through her caring, loving and positive spirit. Her spirit complimented her passionate work with autistic children at the Wiebusch and Nicholson Center for Autism, Inc. as well as her support of the charity named after her.

Every year, Laura gave a speech to the participants, volunteers and the numerous survivors during Laura’s Smile Mile.  Each speech focused on the love and support of family, friends and strangers who helped to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. She encouraged survivors to dream big and to stay positive.

She lifted spirits and inspired many; we will never forget her smile.

Visitation and funeral will be held at Phillip Funeral Home in West Bend. Date and time will be posted on www.phillipfuneralhome.com

When we contacted Jen Borzymowski about her team “Marchin for Marilyn” she was more then happy to speak with us on how the team came together for such a great cause!

Team “Marchin’ for Marilyn” is walking to support Jen’s mother-in-law, Marilyn, who was diagnosed with Stage 3C Ovarian Cancer in April.

“To say her diagnosis has been a shock is an understatement.” says Jen Borzymowski. Marilyn went into the hospital for a “routine” hysterectomy, during surgery, cancer was found.

Jen wanted to do something for her mother-in-law.  She hoped there was something out there to support  “the cause”.   A quick internet search brought her to Laura’s Smile Mile!

Borzymowski says people have been signing up left and right to be part of the event and show their support for Marilyn. Family, friends and even members of a local rugby team will be participating.

She says, “We’ve even gotten donations sent in from as far as Switzerland!”.

Marilyn told Jen that “come hell or high water” she IS going to be at Laura’s Smile Mile on June 4th! Jen says that Marilyn’s strength and positive attitude during this time have been truly inspirational.

Borzymowski states, ” She is ready to kick Cancer’s butt and I know with that attitude she will!”

We can’t wait to have Jen, Marliyn and Team ” Marchin for Marilyn” join us for this year’s event.

Thanks for participating!

Laura’s Smile Mile is excited to welcome back Girls on the Run (GOTR) Greater Milwaukee for the third year.

GOTR is a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls age eight to thirteen. This program incorporates training for a 5K run event with lessons that address many of the issues girls face as they enter adolescence. The GOTR curriculum is designed to encourage positive, emotional, social, mental, spiritual, and physical development.

This year 67 girls are participating in a 10-week program focused on self-esteem building and healthy lifestyles while training for the ‘big race’ on June 4th at Veterans Park. The girls will be running the race with an adult (running buddy) as a significant part of the program focuses on mentoring.

GOTR Council Director Zarine Anklesaria says. “Finding a partnership with a race that was also targeted towards women’s health was very important for us. We are lucky and thankful to Laura’s Smile Mile for allowing our girls to participate in the race free of charge.”
