We honor Karen from Team Karen’s Crusaders

My name is Monica, I am the team captain for Karen’s Crusaders. I first participated in Laura’s Smile Mile run in 2013. I wanted to do a 5K and found Laura’s Smile Mile and thought it’d be perfect since my Aunt Karen was fighting ovarian cancer. I was so touched and inspired by the whole event and post race speeches I decided to create the team Karen’s Crusaders last year for family and friends to show support for Karen in her fight. Last year we had one of the largest teams and hope to have an even bigger team this

Team Spotlight: Teal Tenacity

Tell me about yourself and why you created a team to run/walk Laura’s Smile Mile. My name is Shannon Krueger-Karashinski. In December 2012, I was diagnosed with Stage II LMP Ovarian Cancer at age 36. I was very fortunate to have the disease caught in the type and stage it was, and was able to have the tumor removed surgically with no need to undergo chemo nor radiation. Before December 2012, I had never heard of Ovarian Cancer. Once I learned about the risk factors, symptoms and statistics for those diagnosed, I became frustrated by the fact I had never

A survivor story…..

May 1, 2007 was a day that changed my life forever.  I had surgery to remove an 8lb cyst that was attached to my right ovary. That morning my doctor said if  cancer is suspected, he would proceed with a full hysterectomy. This test is a cancer marker, what I didn’t know is that if the cancer is totally contained within the ovary the test won’t show any cancer.   Needless to say I had a full hysterectomy.  On May 5th, my

My husband, Jarad, and I are organizing our team for the Laura’s Smile Mile this summer.  He found the website online while searching for ovarian cancer support events in Milwaukee.  We are organizing our team to support my mother, Phyllis Hein, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in September 2012.  She had surgery in early October.  There have been a few bumps in the road including an infection which required daily infusions for many weeks.  Her strength, patience and flexibility throughout this journey have been absolutely amazing.  We are so proud of her!   We are happy and relieved to announce
