First UUS is the First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee team. (The two U’s stand for Unitarian Universalist, but also for US!) Three of us in our congregation are ovarian cancer survivors. I am trying to enlist more church members to join my team, but it’s open to other friends as well. One of my sailing buddies who lives in Madison is joining our team. Today there are six members registered, and I hope we’ll have more than 10.
One of the other survivors from our church volunteers along with me in the Survivors Teaching Students program. About every six weeks, we speak to medical students at Sinai and Froedert about symptoms and our experiences. This helps them be more aware of the subtle signs that could mean ovarian cancer. This program has been really helpful to me for three reasons: knowing that we are helping to educate future doctors, getting to know other survivors quite well, and it’s helped me with healing to be able to share my story. Each one of us has a unique experience.
My husband Steve & I have done Laura’s Smile Mile walk the past two years. We are so grateful for the support from Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance (WOCA) that we wanted to raise more funds and awareness by having a team. We don’t plan to have T-shirts made, but we’ll have a sign and some flags to mark our meeting area.
