Krusin for Karen’s team captain, Chris Taschler Hegg is an ovarian cancer survivor. She is participating for her sister-in-law who is now battling the disease.
My name is Chris Taschler Hegg. My brother, Joe, is married to Karen Pinter Taschler. They have two boys, Charlie (age 7) and Jack (age 6). Karen is 48. In November, 2009, Karen was diagnosed with Stage 3C ovarian cancer. Needless to say, it has been quite a roller coaster ride since then. And if this were the beginning of our family’s story, or the end, the tale would be simple. But it’s not.
At age 37, in Dec., 2005, I was diagnosed with Stage 2B breast cancer. And in January, 2012, our Mom, Nancy, was diagnosed with Alzheimers Disease.
Karen had a second surgery in March, and is now in a 2nd round of chemo. As a family, I felt like we needed to do something. It has been an especially difficult year, and I decided that my personal story this year is going to be ALL ABOUT LIVING. And instead of sitting around talking about doing things like this, we are just going to do them! We’ve done much along the way, but Karen suggested this walk.
I live in the Chicago metro, my parents live in Kansas City. Karen and Joe live in Germantown, and most of Karen’s family lives in Wisconsin. We have people coming from Mount Prospect, IL; Orland Park, IL; Shawnee, KS; Mashalltown, IA; and all different cities in WI.
We have 35 people on the Kruisin’ for Karen team. And yes, our team t-shirts are about to be ordered! No special reason for the team name, except to honor Karen. It contains moms, dads, cousins, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends. An unbelievable outpouring of support for Karen.
On our t-shirt design, my 14 year old daughter, Caroline, included a set of footprints. Most of us on the team are Christian (Catholic and other religions), so it just sort of fell together. The poem Footprints is about Jesus picking you up in times of adversity like this. And it’s about all of us picking Karen up and carrying her when she can’t walk anymore.
Thank you Chris!
