Team captain Ellen Devine shares her mother’s story of Ovarian Cancer.

Lynne’s Laps for Love is named in honor of the strongest woman I know, my mother, Lynne Devine. In December of 2010 our entire family was rocked by the news that the healthiest

woman we knew was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer. Saying that we were devastated is an understatement. Over the next 8 months the out pouring of love & support was truly remarkable. We could not help but feel truly blessed to have the amazing support system in family & friends, along with the best health care possible.

Last year, we decided that we wanted to do something to help others fighting ovarian cancer and created the team Lynne’s Laps for Love. The name came partly because my mother wouldn’t let us name it “Lynne’s Lady Parts” and partly because through out all of the chemo and surgeries, good days & bad, the number one thing my mother & our family felt was love.

With members of our family flying in from all over the country, including myself, we have been very fortunate to have my cousin Laura helping to make sure everything runs smoothly in Milwaukee. Last year we were able to get about 25 family members and friends walking/running in custom t-shirts with our team name on it. This year, we have decided to challenge our team to be as creative as possible & wear as much teal as we can! We also hope to have at least 30 people on our team this year!

In July 2011 my mother’s cancer was declared in remission and she showed everyone what her family & friends already knew, that she is not only a fighter but also pretty amazing. Unfortunately, the cancer came back in January 2012 but my mom continues to fight with everything she has, and if you have ever met her, you would know she is a pretty tough woman!
While this has been an incredibly trying time for our entire family, I would be remiss not to mention that my father, Robert, has been the rock holding us up with strength and courage everyday. What can I say, my sister & I are pretty lucky to have such amazing parents.

We hope to continue to walk/run for many years to come to not only honor my mother but also to honor all of the strong and incredible women who came before her and who continue to fight.

Thank you, Ellen!
